Liatyshevsky, Ivan

Liatyshevsky, Ivan [Лятишевський, Іван; Liatyševs'kyj], b 17 October 1879 in Bohorodchany, Stanyslaviv county, Galicia, d 27 November 1957 in Stanislav (Ivano-Frankivsk). Catholic bishop and professor. After studying in Vienna and Innsbruck he was ordained in 1907 and then taught in Stanyslaviv at a gymnasium and the theological seminary. In 1918–19 he was director of church and religious affairs for the Western Ukrainian National Republic. He became a canon of Stanyslaviv eparchy in 1928 and was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Stanyslaviv in 1930. He was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1945 and sentenced to 10 years in a labor camp. He returned to Stanyslaviv (by then called Stanislav) in 1955.
