Lomatsky, Mykhailo

Lomatsky, Mykhailo [Ломацький, Михайло; Lomac'kyj, Myxajlo], b 23 November 1886 in Husiatyn, Galicia, d 24 October 1968 in Munich. Writer. From 1906 he worked as a village school teacher and itinerant tutor in Galicia. After being persecuted by the Polish authorities and imprisoned during the 1939–41 Soviet occupation he sought refuge following the Second World War in Germany; there he taught and helped to organize the Ukrainian Youth Association in displaced persons camps and contributed to Ukrainian émigré newspapers. Between 1956 and 1968 he published 13 books of ethnographic sketches and Romantic-historical prose about the colorful inhabitants of the Hutsul region, where he had once lived and taught.
