Maidansky, Vsevolod

Maidansky, Vsevolod [Майданський, Всеволод; Majdans'kyj; or Kolomiitsev-Maidansky], b 10 December 1927 in Kalisz, Poland, d 16 December 2007 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Orthodox bishop. He studied theology at the theological seminary in Warsaw and at the Dillingen Theological University in Germany, and social work at Yeshiva University in New York (MA, 1964), and worked at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 1985 he was ordained a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America, and in 1987 he was consecrated a bishop and head of the church. He was actively involved in the ecumenical movement, in cultivating close relations with other Ukrainian Orthodox churches and the Ukrainian Catholic church and serving as a member of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of America. He served as head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America until 1996. In 1997, after the unification of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA, Bishop Vsevolod was appointed the Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA with his episcopal see in Chicago. In 2000 he was formally elevated to the office of archbishop by the Holy Synod of Constantinople.
