Malets, Volodymyr

Malets, Volodymyr [Малець, Володимир; Malec'], b 23 April 1890 in the Kherson region, d 23 July 1967 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Orthodox bishop. He graduated from the historical-philological faculty of Kyiv University in 1915 and then taught in postsecondary schools and engaged in scholarly work. In June 1942 he was consecrated bishop of Cherkasy in the renewed Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox church (UAOC) in Kyiv. In 1944 he emigrated to Warsaw, and then to Germany, where he was made bishop of UAOC faithful in northern Bavaria. From 1946 he was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Scholarly Theological Institute and curator of the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Munich (1948–9). In 1951 he emigrated to Detroit, and in 1957 he was elevated to the office of archbishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA.
