Martel, Antoine

Martel, Antoine, b 2 February 1899 in Baume-les-Dames, Doubs, France, d 12 October 1931 in Besançon, France. French Slavist. A graduate of the School of Oriental Languages in Paris (1924), from 1927 he taught Russian and Polish languages and literatures at the University of Lille and published a chronicle of Ukrainian publications in Revue des études slaves. His posthumously published book, La Langue polonaise dans le Pays des Ruthènes (1939), is one of the most important surveys of the history of 16th- and 17th-century literary Ukrainian language.
