Modylevsky, Yakiv

Modylevsky, Yakiv [Модилевський, Яків; Modylevs'kyj, Jakiv], b 28 January 1883 in Kyiv, d 8 March 1968 in Kyiv. Cytologist and plant embryologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1939. A graduate of the University of Munich (1907) and Kyiv University (1908), he worked for the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (from 1922) and taught at Kyiv University and other institutions (1920–49). He joined the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1931, and in 1935–41 served as its director.
