Novytsky, Illia

Novytsky, Illia [Новицький, Ілля; Novyc'kyj, Illija], b ?, d 1704. Cossack leader; father of Hryhorii Novytsky. He was colonel of volunteer cavalry regiments (see Volunteer regiments) under Hetmans Ivan Samoilovych and Ivan Mazepa (1673–1700), and he distinguished himself in wars against the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate. He assumed the post of acting hetman when Mazepa went to Moscow in 1689.
