Obrist, Johann Georg

Obrist, Johann Georg, b 26 May 1843 in Jenbach, Tirol, Austria, d 18 April 1901 in Innsbruck. Austrian literary scholar and journalist. From 1868 to 1873 he taught in Chernivtsi. He was one of the first ethnic Germans to write about and translate the poetry of Taras Shevchenko. His critical biography Taras Grigoriewicz Szewczenko, ein kleinrussischer Dichter (1870) included his free translations of 14 poems. His translations also appeared in the collection Taras Schewtschenko, der grösste Dichter der Ukraine (Vienna 1914).
