Scherrer, Marie

Scherrer, Marie, b 20 June 1902 in Romania. French scholar of Ukrainian language and literature; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. She was educated in Strasbourg and Paris, and taught French in Prague until 1939. After returning to Paris she worked in the library of the Institute of Slavic Studies and taught Ukrainian literature at École des langues orientales (with Elie Borschak). She wrote Les Dumy ukrainiennes: Épopée Cosaque (1947), translated Ukrainian literary classics into French (particularly Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, and Maksym Rylsky), and contributed to Revue des études slaves in 1959–80, notably as a longtime editor of the publication’s chronicle of Ukrainian scholarship.
