Sheremetev, Vasilii

Sheremetev, Vasilii [Шереметев, Василий; Šeremetev, Vasilij], b ca 1622, d 4 May 1682. Muscovite military and state figure. A commander of Muscovite troops in Ukraine in 1654–6, he was under Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s command in the Battle of Okhmativ (1655). A voivode of Kyiv in 1658–60, he was captured during a battle near Chudniv by Polish forces, who turned him over to the Crimean khan Mehmed IV Girei. His freedom was purchased by Muscovy in 1681.
