Svystun, Mykola

Svystun, Mykola (Свистун, Микола; nom de guerre: Yasen, Voron), b 1912 in Ordiv, Radekhiv county, Galicia, d 8 December 1944 in Dubno reion, Rivne oblast. Senior Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) officer. He joined the Ukrainian Military Organization (1928) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and as their leading activist in Radekhiv county, he was twice arrested by Polish authorities. During 1942–3 he organized and commanded UPA units in Volhynia. In 1944 he commanded a brigade in the UPA-South and was the top UPA commander at the Battle of Hurby. He was killed in action while performing the duties of chief of staff of the UPA-South.
