Ternovsky, Serhii

Ternovsky, Serhii [Терновський, Сергій; Ternovs'kyj, Serhij], b 1848 in Moscow, d 1916. Church historian; brother of Pylyp Ternovsky. He graduated from the Kyiv Theological Academy and then taught Hebrew and biblical archeology at the Kazan Theological Academy and worked for the Kyiv Archeographic Commission. His monograph ‘Issledovanie o podchinenii Kyivskoi mitropolii Moskovskomu patriarkhatu’ (Research on the Subordination of Kyiv metropoly to Moscow Patriarchate) appeared as an introductory essay to a collection of archival documents, edited by him, which was published in Arkhiv Iugo-Zapadnoi Rossii (Archives of Southwestern Russia, pt 1, vol 5 [1872]), for which he received a master’s degree in theology. He also wrote an outline of biblical archeology (2 vols, 1891, 1895; republished as Bibleiskaia starina [Biblical Antiquity], 1900), a history of the Greek-Eastern church during the period of the ecumenical councils (1883), and a study of the first three centuries of Christianity (1878).
