Union of Ukrainian Community Centres of Canada

Union of Ukrainian Community Centres of Canada (Союз українських народних домів; Soiuz ukrainskykh narodnykh domiv, or СУНД; SUND). National association of Ukrainian community centres (narodni domy) under the umbrella of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League (SUS). Established in 1927 as part of the SUS organizational structure, the Union was incorporated in 1928. It soon entered into a dispute with a rival Union of Ukrainian National Homes, which had been set up in 1929 under the auspices of the Winnipeg Ukrainian National Home. The latter group, however, lost an ensuing legal action for the right to the name and quietly withdrew from its organizational activity. The Union declined in the 1940s and 1950s as a host of rural Ukrainian community centers closed as a result of extensive depopulation.
