Vapniarka [Вапнярка; Vapnjarka]. Map: V-9. A town smt (2018 pop 7,612) in Tomashpil raion, Vinnytsia oblast. It emerged in the 1870s as a railway settlement. As a railway junction, in 1919 it was contested by the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic, the Ukrainian Galician Army, the Red Army, and Anton Denikin’s forces. In an important series of battles there between 26 and 31 July 1919 the Third Iron Rifle Division of the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic under Col Oleksander Udovychenko defeated numerically superior Bolshevik forces. Today its main enterprises belong to the railroad transportation industry, but it also has a large baking complex and a lime factory.
