Vil’na Ukraïna (United States)

Vil’na Ukraïna (United States) («Вільна Україна»; Free Ukraine). A journal published by the Ukrainian Free Society of America in Detroit and, from 1961, New York. Edited by a board headed for many years by Volodymyr Lysy, it appeared quarterly from 1954 to 1967 and then once or twice a year to 1972 (a total of 67 issues). The journal contained valuable articles and memoirs pertaining to the history of Ukrainian socialism, the period of Ukraine’s struggle for independence (1917–20), the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army; analyses of Soviet Ukrainian politics, economics, education, and demographic changes; and critiques of Ukrainian émigré politics, particularly of the OUN (Bandera faction), the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, and the Ukrainian National Council.
