Jędrzejewicz, Jerzy, b 2 March 1902 in Bawaria, Końskie county, Poland, d 19 November 1975 in Warsaw. Polish writer, translator, and literary critic. A professor of literature at Warsaw University, his finest contribution to Ukrainian studies was a biographical novel about Taras Shevchenko titled Noce ukraińskie albo rodowód geniusza (Ukrainian Nights or the Biography of a Genius, 1966), which was a best-seller in Poland and was republished twice (1970, 1972). A Ukrainian translation by Ye. Roslytsky appeared in Toronto in 1980. Jędrzejewicz translated over 30 novels, over 20 dramas, and many poems from Ukrainian, Russian, Italian, and German to Polish. His translations of Ukrainian literature include a two-volume collection of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s works (1954), Maksym Rylsky’s Shopen (Chopin, 1947), Shevchenko’s Progulka s udovol’stviem i ne bez morali (A Trip with Pleasure and Not without a Moral, 1960), a book of selected poetry by Shevchenko (1972), and a book of short stories by Yevhen Hutsalo. He also wrote articles on Shevchenko, Kotsiubynsky, Hutsalo, and others.
