Kolberg, Oskar, b 22 February 1814 in Przysucha, Grand Duchy of Warsaw, d 3 June 1890 in Cracow. Prominent Polish ethnographer; folk musicologist and minor composer. For 50 years (until 1885) he conducted fieldwork as an independent scholar and as a member of the Anthropological Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences throughout Poland, Western Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania and amassed a huge amount of ethnographic data on these regions. Much of it was published as Lud: Jego zwyczaje, sposób życia, mowa, podania, przysłowia, obrzędy, gusła, zabawy, pieśni, muzykai tańce (The Folk: Its Customs, Way of Life, Language, Legends, Proverbs, Rituals, Magic, Games, Songs, Music, and Dances, 23 vols, 1867–90) and Obrazy etnograficzne (Ethnographic Images, 10 vols, 1882–90); of the latter, five volumes were devoted to regions of Ukraine. When Kolberg died, more than half of his research remained in manuscript and unedited form.

In 1961 the Polish Folklore Society and Academy of Sciences began publishing Kolberg’s complete works, including previously published volumes and all unedited manuscripts, notes, and correspondence. By 2002, 84 volumes had appeared. The volumes on Ukrainian regions are Pokucie (Pokutia, vols 29–32, 1962–3, and 81), Chełmskie (The Kholm region, vols 33–4, 1964, and 82), Przemyskie (The Peremyshl Region, vol 35, 1964, and 83[2 bks]), Wołyń (Volhynia, vol 36, 1964, and 84), and the previously unpublished Sanockie-Krośnieńskie (The Sianik-Krosno Region, vols 49–51, 1972), Białoruś-Polesie (Belarus-Polisia, vol 52, 1968), Ruś Karpacka (Carpathian Ruthenia, vols 54–5, 1970–1, on the Hutsul region), and Ruś Czerwona (Red Ruthenia, vols 56–7[3 bks], 1976–9, on central Ukrainian Galicia).
