Makar, Stefan (Макар, Стефан; pen name: Stepan Khlopiv), b 1870 in Bushkovychi, Peremyshl county, Galicia, d 2 January 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Greek Catholic priest and community activist. After emigrating to the United States in 1897, he was elected to the auditing committee of the Ruthenian National Association and became editor of the association's paper Svoboda (1897–1900). He contributed sketches, stories, and a survey of Ukrainian immigration to the United States. His plays Amerykans'kyi shliakhtych (American Noble) and Skupar (Miser) were staged successfully, and a collection of his stories appeared in the early 1900s as Biznes (Business). He translated English books into Ukrainian and compiled a Ukrainian–English dictionary (1901). Much of his time was devoted to organizing Ukrainian schools and financial institutions.
