Nikolaev, Lev [Николаев, Лев], b 10 February 1898 in Tahanrih, Oblast of the Don Cossack Host, d 10 December 1955 in Kharkiv. Anthropologist and orthopedist. A graduate of Paris University (1916) and the medical faculty of Kharkiv University (1920), he chaired the anatomy department at the Kharkiv Institute of People's Education (1924–30) and headed the anthropology subdepartment of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (1928–34). At the latter institute he organized and chaired (from 1934) the first department of biomechanics in the USSR. His papers appeared in Materialy po antropologii Ukrainy) (vols 1–3, 1926–7), and he wrote Antropometricheskie materialy dlia izgotovleniia standartnoi obuvi (Anthropometric Materials for the Manufacture of Standard Footwear, 1931) and Biomekhanicheskie osnovy protezirovaniia (Biomechanical Foundations of Prosthetics, 1954).
