Ukrainskii zhurnal («Украинский журнал»; Ukrainian Journal). A semimonthly Russian-language journal of literature, art, scholarship, and civic affairs, published by the Kharkiv University Press in 1824–5 (a total of 48 issues). It was edited by O. Sklabovsky and appeared in a pressrun of 600 copies. From the end of 1824 important archival documents pertaining to the history of the Hetman state were published in a separate section called ‘Little Russian Antiquities.’ Ukrainskii zhurnal also contained ethnographic articles on Ukrainian towns and the Ukrainian language by J. Vernet and Aleksei Levshin, and the first attempt at a synthetic assessment of Ukrainian poetry, by Ivan Kulzhynsky. The journal also reported extensively on educational, civic, and cultural affairs in Slobidska Ukraine.
