Bohdanovych-Zarudny, Samiilo

Bohdanovych-Zarudny, Samiilo [Bohdanovyč-Zarudnyj, Samijlo]. Cossack diplomat and general judge of the Zaporozhian Host. A registered Cossack, he defected to Bohdan Khmelnytsky's side at Korsun in 1648. In 1650 he conducted negotiations in Warsaw, and he headed the Cossack delegations to Moscow (1652), Turkey (1653), and again Moscow (1654), to conclude the Pereiaslav Treaty of 1654. In 1654 he was appointed general judge. In 1657 he went to Transylvania to help negotiate the Treaty of Hadiach, which was signed with Poland in 1658. He was made a noble in the following year. After Ivan Vyhovsky's fall he joined Yurii Khmelnytsky and participated in drawing up the Treaty of Slobodyshche. In 1664 he fought on the Polish side against Ivan Briukhovetsky.
