The Cumans' marauding attacks in southern Rus’ forced him to join other princes in fighting the nomads. In 1185 he organized a campaign without the knowledge of the grand princeof Kyiv; his army, after an initial victory, was surrounded on the Kaiala River and routed. Ihor was captured but managed to escape. This event is the subject of the epic tale Slovo o polku Ihorevi (The Tale of Ihor's Campaign). After Ihor's defeat the Cumans ravaged the Pereiaslav region.
