Malovany, Volodymyr

Malovany, Volodymyr [Мальований, Володимир; Mal'ovanyj], b 1848 in Katerynoslav county, d 10 March 1893 in Tomsk, Siberia. Political activist and poet. He was exiled to Balagansk, Irkutsk gubernia, in 1879 for being a member of the Odesa Hromada, but he escaped in 1881 to Geneva, where he became active in Mykhailo Drahomanov’s circle. He returned to Ukraine in 1883 under the assumed name of Hryhorii Petrov, and in Kharkiv he helped to establish a hromada and developed plans for the establishment of a Ukrainian radical party. He was arrested a second time in 1883, and died of stomach cancer in Tomsk. His poem ‘Ne poturai’ (Pay No Heed) was published by Ivan Franko in the anthology Akordy (1903).
