Hurzhii, Ivan

Hurzhii, Ivan [Гуржій, Іван; Huržij], b 28 September 1915 in Khudiaky, Cherkasy county, Kyiv gubernia, d 31 October 1971 in Kyiv. Historian; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1958. From 1948 he worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, as a senior research associate, professor and holder of the chairs of Feudal History (1955–8), and of Historiography and Source Studies (1969–71), and assistant director (1958–71). His works deal with the socioeconomic history of Ukraine in the 18th and 19th centuries. They include Zarodzhennia robitnychoho klasu Ukraïny (Kinets' XVIII–persha polovyna XIX st.) (The Birth of Ukraine’s Working Class [Late 18th–First Half of the 19th Century], 1958), Rozvytok tovarnoho vyrobnytstva i torhivli na Ukraïni (z kintsia XVIII st. do 1861 r.) (The Development of Manufacturing and Trade in Ukraine [from the End of the 18th Century to 1861], 1962), and Ukraïna v systemi vserosiis'koho rynku 60–90-kh rokiv XIX st. (Ukraine in the All-Russian Market System in the 1860s–1890s, 1968). A bibliography of his works was published in 1965.
