Khomenko, Ivan

Khomenko, Ivan [Xomenko], b 11 November 1892 in Vinnytsia, d 10 April 1981 on the Isle of Capri, Italy. Ukrainian Catholic priest and biblical scholar. He studied at Kyiv University and Vienna University and theology in Rome (PhD 1925). In 1918–20 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyiv and in the embassy of the Ukrainian National Republic in Vienna. Influenced by Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky, he became a priest in 1940. In 1945 he immigrated to Italy. There he translated the Bible into Ukrainian from the original Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek texts. In 1963 the Basilian order in Rome published his complete translation of the Bible as Sviate Pys’mo Staroho i Novoho Zavitu (The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament).
