Kovalenko, Anatolii

Kovalenko, Anatolii [Коваленко, Анатолій], b 16 January 1905 in Kyiv, d 19 September 1973 in Kyiv. Specialist in mechanics; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1961. A graduate of the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute, he taught there from 1935 to 1949 and then at Kyiv University. From 1936 he also worked at the Institute of Construction Mechanics at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, serving as director from 1959 to 1965 (at that time: the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR). He founded a branch of thermomechanics, and published important works on the theory of thermoelasticity and thermal stress and the theoretical basis of turbine-blade design.
