Madey, Johannes

Madey, Johannes, b 23 April 1933 in Katowice, Silesia, Poland, d 10 October 2012 in Paderborn, Germany. German Catholic scholar; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1985. He studied philosophy and theology in Fulda and Munich, and completed a D TH in 1961 with a dissertation on Vladimir Solovev. He was a professor of Eastern theology at the Johann-Adam-Möhler Ecumenical Institute in Paderborn from 1972, and an honorary professor of the Pontifical Eastern Institute of Religious Studies in Kottayam, the only faculty of Eastern Catholicism in India. He has also served as a special adviser on Eastern Christianity to the Melchite and German Catholic churches. Madey published several monographs on the history and organization of the Ukrainian Catholic church, including Kirche zwischen Ost und West:Beiträge zur Geschichte der Ukrainischen und Weissruthenischen Kirche (1969) and Le Patriarcat Ukrainien vers la perfection de l’état juridique actuel (1971), and articles in the Encyclopedia of Ukraine, Bohosloviia, and other collections and journals.
