Ortynsky, Ilarion

Ortynsky, Ilarion or Hiliarii [Ортинський, Іларіон; Ortyns'kyj], b 29 August 1907 in Sambir, Galicia, d 20 June 1974 in Oviedo, Spain. Geologist and geophysicist. He graduated from the Cracow Mining Academy (1930) and worked in the petroleum industry in Iraq (until 1939) and for a French geological exploration company in the Algerian Sahara Desert (1947–65). In 1949 he discovered a new oil field in Mesuda. From 1967 he helped organize and taught at a mining school in Oviedo, Spain, under the auspices of UNESCO. He published scientific articles on the geology of the northern Sahara Desert.
