Rieger, Janusz

Rieger, Janusz, b 20 September 1934 in Cracow. Polish linguist. Rieger studied at the Jagellonian University in Cracow (MA, 1955) and at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PH D, 1967). He has taught at various universities in Poland and since 1988 has been a professor at the Catholic University in Lublin. Rieger’s specialization is Slavic (esp Ukrainian) dialectology, and he has worked in the areas of Slavic onomastics and Polish-Ukrainian linguistic relations. He is the author and coauthor of 15 books and numerous articles, among them the linguistic atlas of the Boiko dialects (vols 1–6, 1980–6), which he edited and compiled, is of special importance to Ukrainian linguistics (see Boiko dialect).
