Savytsky, Stepan

Savytsky, Stepan [Савицький, Степан; Savyc'kyj], b ca 1684 in the Lubny region, d 1751. Cossack officer. He served as chancellor of Lubny regiment from 1714 to 1739. In 1718 he translated into Ukrainian the first part of Samuel Twardowski’s epic poem Wojna domowa ... (The Civil War ..., 1681), which was later published in the addenda to Samiilo Velychko’s Chronicle by the Kyiv Archeographic Commission (vol 4, 1864). Mykhailo Hrushevsky regarded Savytsky’s Povest' o kozatskoi voine s poliakami (The Story of the Cossack War with the Poles, 1718) as an independent historiographical work (1934). Savytsky was a member of the commission that compiled the Code of Laws of 1743.
