It consisted of volunteers from the Fifth Corps of the Russian army. In January 1918 it suffered heavy casualties defending Kyiv from the invading Red Army. Its surviving units re-formed as the Second Battalion of the Separate Zaporozhian Detachment and later expanded into the Second Infantry Regiment of the Zaporozhian Corps.
