Vatutine

Vatutine or Vatutyne [Ватутіне or Ватутине]. Map: IV-12. A city (2011 pop 17,805) on the Shpolka River in Zvenyhorodka raion, Cherkasy oblast. It was founded in 1946 as the workers' settlement Shakhtynske, was renamed in 1949, and was granted city status in 1952. It is an industrial center with lignite, granite, and kaolin mines, a briquette factory (see Peat industry), and a refractory-materials industry.
