Volokh, Petro

Volokh, Petro [Волох, Петро; Volox], b 1699 in Wallachia, d May 1768 in Kyiv. Jeweler and goldsmith. He worked at the Kyivan Cave Monastery. His most important work is the Royal Gate for the iconostasis of Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, designed by Semen Taranovsky and made by Volokh and Ivan Zavadovsky in 1747. The silver gate was carved with plant ornamentation and bas-reliefs of the Annunciation, Christ’s Presentation at the Temple, the Evangelists, King David, and other biblical figures.
