Mal, b ?, d 946. Derevlianian prince, also known as Niskinei. According to Povist’ vremennykh lit in 945 Mal led the Derevlianians of Iskorosten (Korosten) in a revolt against Prince Ihor of Kyiv. Ihor was killed in the revolt, and the Derevlianians proposed that his widow, Princess Olha, marry Mal, so that he could lay claim to the Kyiv principality. She replied by forcibly suppressing the revolt in 946, at which time Mal was either killed or executed. In certain interpretations of the chronicles it is alleged that Mal was the father of Malusha (mother of Volodymyr the Great), but that is highly unlikely.
