Stupnytsky, Vasyl [Ступницький, Василь; Stupnyc'kyj, Vasyl'], b 2 January 1879 in Mykhailivka, Kharkiv gubernia, d 1945? Composer, folk songs collector, conductor, and teacher. A graduate of Kharkiv University, he conducted the DUKh kapelle, organized traveling concerts, and undertook pioneering research into the music ethnography of the Kharkiv area. He emigrated to the West in 1944 and disappeared in Berlin the following year. His compositions include works of choral music to texts by Taras Shevchenko, church music, and folk song arrangements: Pisni Slobids'koï Ukraïny (Folk Songs of Slobidska Ukraine, 1929) and the posthumously published Slobozhans'ki narodni pisni (Folk Songs of Slobidska Ukraine, 1962) and Muzyka dlia ditei (Music for Children, 1978).
