Suceava. Map: VI-7. A city (2011 pop 92,121) on the Suceava River and a county center in Romania. The city is mentioned in 12th-century chronicles and in a charter of 1388 as a trade center on the Lviv–Galaţi route. During 1375–1564 it was the capital of the Moldavian principality. In 1653 Tymish Khmelnytsky died during the Battle of Suceava. Under Austrian rule Ukrainians settled in the region. Today there are about 35 Ukrainian villages and nearly 40,000 Ukrainians in the northern part of the Suceava region.
