Zalizniak, Mykola [Залізняк, Микола; Zaliznjak], b 10 August 1888 in Melitopol, Tavriia gubernia, d 1950 in Perm, RSFSR. Civic and political activist; husband of Olena Zalizniak. During the First World War he worked in Vienna as a journalist and publisher and was active in the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine. He headed the diplomatic mission of the Ukrainian National Republic in Finland in 1919–20 and then returned to Vienna. In 1945 he was arrested by the Soviet secret police and sentenced to 15 years in prison, where he perished. He translated popular scientific works and wrote articles and numerous pamphlets about Ukraine and contributed to a collection of memoirs about the Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (1928).
