Borysov, Valentyn

Borysov, Valentyn [Борисов, Валентин], b 20 July 1901 in Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv gubernia, d 25 September 1988 in Kharkiv. Composer and music pedagogue. Borysov graduated from the Kharkiv Music and Drama Institute in 1927. From 1944 to 1949 he served as rector of Kharkiv Conservatory. Later for many years headed the Department of Composition at the Kharkiv Institute of Arts. Among his compositions are the symphonic poem Karmeliuk (1927); two symphonies (1957, 1963); Ukrainian Suite (1949); Celebration Overture (1969); a piano concerto (1971); the cycle Music for Strings (1975); the cantata Guarding the Dnipro Hydroelectric Stations (1932); the oratorio Wedding Feast (1972); chamber-instrumental works; works for choral and vocal ensembles; and art songs to the words of Taras Shevchenko, Pavlo Tychyna, Volodymyr Sosiura, and others. He also wrote the book on Peter Tchaikovsky’s connection to Ukraine, entitled Chaikovs'kyi i Ukraïna (Tchaikovsky and Ukraine, Kyiv 1955).
