Ilkevych, Hryhorii [Ількевич, Григорій; Il'kevyč, Hryhorij], b 13 October 1803 in Nove Selo, Zhovkva circle, Galicia, d 1841 in Horodenka, Kolomyia circle, Galicia. Folklorist and ethnographer. A gymnasium teacher in Kolomyia (1824–35) and Horodenka (1835–41), he published a collection of 2,715 Western Ukrainian folk sayings, proverbs, and riddles, Halyts'ki prypovidky i zahadky zibrani Hryhorym Il'kevychom (Galician Proverbs and Riddles Collected by Hryhorii Ilkevych, 1841). From 1836 to 1840 he also wrote a number of articles on ethnography. Parts of his major work, Zbirnyk ukraïns'kykh istorychnykh pisen' (Collection of Ukrainian Historical Songs), were published in Rusalka Dnistrovaia (1837) and in anthologies edited by Yakiv Holovatsky and Wacław Zaleski, but most of the historical songs he collected remain unpublished.
