Kovaliv, Panteleimon [Ковалів, Пантелеймон], b 9 August 1898 in Brailiv, Vinnytsia county, Podilia gubernia, d 15 November 1973 in Washington, DC, USA. Linguist; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1949. A graduate of the Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1930), he was a docent at the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute and at Kyiv University. After migrating as a displaced person to Germany in 1944, he became professor at the Ukrainian Free University in 1945 and professor and rector at the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Munich (1946–51). In 1952 he emigrated to the United States of America. His publications include works in the history of the Ukrainian language such as Narysy z istoriï ukraïns'koï movy (Sketches on the History of the Ukrainian Language, 1941), coauthored with Mykola Hrunsky; studies of the descriptive and historical morphology of Russian and Ukrainian (prefixes, participles, stress); and Leksychnyi fond literaturnoï movy kyïvs'koho periodu X–XIV st. (The Lexical Fund of the Literary Language of the Kyivan Period, X–XIV Centuries, 2 vols, 1962, 1964). He defended the authenticity of Molytovnyk-sluzhebnyk: Pam’iatka XIV st. (The Prayer Book-Missal: A Memorial of the 14th Century, 1960).
