Luchytsky, Volodymyr [Лучицький, Володимир; Lučyc'kyj], b 2 May 1877 in Kyiv, d 20 October 1949 in Kyiv. Geologist and petrographer; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1945; son of Ivan Luchytsky. He graduated from Kyiv University in 1899 and studied abroad. He then taught at Kyiv University, where in 1912 he was appointed a professor of geology. He was head of the Ukrainian Geological Committee (1917–23), which he helped organize. Then he served as a professor at the Moscow Mining Academy (1923–30) and the Moscow Institute of Geological Prospecting (1930–41). He returned to Kyiv, where he was a professor of mineralogy and petrography at Kyiv University (1945–9) and became director of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1947–9). Luchytsky’s scientific works were devoted to the petrography and mineralogy of the Ukrainian Crystalline Shield, the stratigraphy of precambrian rocks of the East European Platform, regional hydrogeology, and the mineral resources of Ukraine. He prepared hydrogeological and geological maps of Ukraine. His petrography textbook, first published in 1910, had gone through six editions by 1947. He was editor in chief of the fifth volume of Geologiia USSR (Geology of the Ukrainian SSR, 1944).
