Magura, Sylvester [Маґура, Сильвестер], b 2 January 1897 in Husiane, Lublin gubernia, and d 8 January 1938 in Kyiv. Archeologist. He specialized in the Trypillia culture and the archeology of the settlements of Kyivan Rus’ and wrote many scholarly articles during the 1920s and 1930s. He excavated the Volodymyrivka archeological site, Kolomyishchyna archeological sites, and other Trypillian settlements. In 1934 Magura became a member of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He remained in this position until 1937, when he was arrested in the Stalinist terror, sentenced to death on trumped-up charges and subsequently executed. He was rehabilitated in 1960.
