Markevych, Oleksii [Маркевич, Олексій; Markevyč, Oleksij], b 17 March 1847 in Smosh, Pryluky county, Poltava gubernia, d 18 June 1903 in Odesa. Historian and community figure; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) from 1901. He studied at the Nizhyn Lyceum, graduated from Odesa University (1869), and taught Russian history in gymnasiums in Odesa and Tahanrih before becoming a docent (1880–8) and professor (1888–95) at Odesa University. He was forced to retire from the university after he was accused of spreading Ukrainophile propaganda. He remained an active member of the Odesa Society of History and Antiquities and the Tavriia Learned Archival Commission. A specialist on the history of Muscovy and Southern Ukraine, he wrote monographs on the Muscovite service nobility (PH D diss, 1879) and the Rus’ chronicles (2 vols, 1883, 1885) and contributed articles to Kievskaia starina, Zapysky Naukovoho tovarystva im. Shevchenka, and Zapiski Imperatorskogo Odesskogo obshchestva istorii i drevnostei, which published a bibliography of his works in vol 26.
