Moskalenko, Artem [Москаленко, Артем], b 2 November 1901 in Hryhorivka, Oleksandrivske county, Katerynoslav gubernia, d 23 October 1990 in Odesa. Linguist and pedagogue; father of Nadiia Moskalenko. A graduate of the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of People's Education (1926), from 1939 he chaired Odesa University’s department of Ukrainian language, served as dean of the Faculty of Philology, and also taught at the Odesa Pedagogical Institute and the Odesa Higher Party School. He published nearly 200 works, including a Ukrainian language course conspectus (1929); postsecondary textbooks on Ukrainian historical grammar (1941, 1951), modern phonetics (1947), sentence syntax (1959), historical phonetics (1960), orthography (1971), and historical lexicology (1972); histories of the Ukrainian language (1948), alphabet and orthography (1958), pre-Soviet dialectology (1961), Soviet dialectology (1962), and orthography in the Soviet period (1968); a chrestomathy in the history of the Ukrainian literary language (1954); a dialectal dictionary of Odesa oblast (1958); and a survey history of Ukrainian lexicography (1961). He also prepared several dialectological questionnaires, compiled two issues of a chrestomathy of Ukrainian dialects in Odesa oblast (1965–6), organized several dialectological conferences in Odesa and many dialectological field trips, and prepared bibliographies of Ukrainian dialectology (1966) and orthography (1971), the history of the standardization of the Ukrainian literary language (1974) (see Standard Ukrainian), and lexicology and lexicography (1973).
