Pevny, Bohdan [Певний, Богдан; Pevnyj], b 4 June 1931 in Lutsk, Volhynia, d 7 September 2002 in Kew Gardens, New York State (buried in South Bound Brook, New Jersey). Artist and art critic; son of Petro Pevny; full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in the US. A postwar émigré, he studied art at the Art Students’ League, the National Academy of Design, New York University, and Columbia University in New York. He became head of the Society of Young Painters of New York in 1955 and vice-president of the Ukrainian Artists' Association in the USA in 1963. He took part in many group exhibitions, illustrated books and journals, contributed articles on art to the émigré press, prepared the text for exhibit catalogues (eg, Mykhailo Chereshnovsky and Halyna Mazepa) and edited a book about Mykola Nedilko (1983). He became art editor of the monthly Suchasnist’ in 1984 and from 1989 he published articles on art in journals in Ukraine, such as Dzvin, Pam’iatky Ukraïny, and Ukraïna. In 1996 he became the joint editor-in-chief for the journal Suchasnist’.
