Shulgin, Vitalii

Shulgin, Vitalii [Шульгин, Виталий; Šul'gin, Vitalij], b 1822 in Kaluga, Russia, d 1878 in Kyiv. Publicist and pedagogue; father of Vasilii Shulgin. He grew up in Nizhyn and studied (1838) and taught history at Kyiv University (1849–62). In 1863 he founded the ultraconservative, anti-Ukrainian newspaper Kievlianin (which he edited until his death). His writings include the monograph Iugo-Zapadnyi krai v poslednee 25-letie (1838–1863) (The Southwestern Land [Ukraine] in the Past 25 Years [1838–63], 1863), numerous publicistic works, and a series of history textbooks. They are characterized by a strong pro-Russian bias.
