Engel, Johann Christian von

Engel, Johann Christian von, b 17 October 1770 in Levoča, present-day Slovakia, d 20 March 1814 in Vienna. An Austrian historian, among whose works on Ukrainian history are Geschichte von Halitsch und Wladimir bis 1772 (1792–3) and Geschichte der Ukraine und der ukrainischen Kosaken (1796). The latter work is one of the first substantial contributions to scholarly studies on the history of Ukraine and is based on important historical documents. Borys Krupnytsky’s study on Engel was published in Abhandlungen des Ukrainischen Wissenschaftlichen Instituts, 3 (Berlin 1931). A Ukrainian translation of Geschichte der Ukraine und der ukrainischen Kosaken was published in Kyiv in 2014, with an introduction by Volodymyr Kravchenko.
