Hlynka, Isydore

Hlynka, Isydore [Глинка, Ізидор], b 17 February 1909 in Ternopil, Galicia, d 18 May 1983 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Biochemist and community leader. In 1910 his family immigrated to Delph, Alberta. After graduating from the University of Alberta and the California Institute of Technology (PH D 1940), he worked for the Canadian Department of Agriculture. An authority on cereal chemistry, Hlynka developed various laboratory instruments and edited Wheat Chemistry and Technology (1964). For many years he sat on the presidium of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee and served as president of the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko. Hlynka is the author of The Other Canadians (1981), a collection of articles on Canadian multiculturalism originally published during the 1970s in the newspaper Ukraïns’kyi holos under the pseudonym of Ivan Harmata.
