Hoshovsky, Volodymyr

Hoshovsky, Volodymyr [Гошовський, Володимир; Hošovs'kyj], b 25 September 1922 in Uzhhorod, Transcarpathia, d 30 December 1996 in Lviv. Folklorist, founder of cybernetic ethnomusicology. A graduate of the Lviv Conservatory (1953), where he lectured (1961–9). He founded and directed the folk-music cabinet at the conservatory. In 1975 he became a research associate of the Arts Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in Yerevan, and compiled a cybernetic universal structural-analytical catalogue of folk songs (UNSAKAT). His chief publications are Ukrainskie pesni Zakarpat'ia (Ukrainian Songs of Transcarpathia, 1968) and U istokov narodnoi muzyki slavian (At the Sources of the Slavs’ Folk Music, 1971). He edited a Russian collection of Klyment Kvitka’s works and a collection of papers on the algorithmic analysis of musical texts.
