Humetska, Lukiia

Humetska, Lukiia [Гумецька, Лукія; Humec'ka, Lukija], b 18 January 1901 in Livcha, Liubachiv county, Galicia, d 12 January 1988 in Lviv. Philologist and linguist. A graduate of Lviv University (1929), she received her doctorate in 1956 and was the director of the linguistics section of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv. A well-trained philologist, Humetska studied primarily the Ukrainian language of the 14th and 15th centuries, writing many articles about it and a book on word formation in the official documents of that time (1958). She was the chief editor of a Polish-Ukrainian dictionary (2 vols, 1958, 1960) and a dictionary of Old Ukrainian of the 14th and 15th centuries (2 vols, 1977, 1978), and a member of the editorial boards of the 11-volume dictionary of the Ukrainian language (1970–80) and the linguistic journal Movoznavstvo (1967–82).
